Impulsonics Introducing: Dr Luke Cox, CEO

Welcome to the first in our Impulsonics Introducing series about the people who make our team run in their own words. This time our CEO Luke Cox!

1.       What do you do at Impulsonics?

I’m the CEO which means I’m responsible for leading the company day to day. In reality it means I’m responsible for keeping all of the moving parts that make up Impulsonics running smoothly. That’s not just the people in the core team but also the wider network of stakeholders. I describe it a lot as juggling jelly. Am I mixing my metaphors? Yes, but maintaining consistent metaphors is fortunately not within my job description.

2.       What’s your background?

a.       I did a degree in Mechanical Engineering and during that had a very brief stint as an building services engineer. I learned a lot from that but mainly that I wanted to do something completely different! I did a PhD in the Ultrasonics Group at the University of Bristol focusing on acoustic levitation as I wanted to work on something really on the cutting edge of technology. After than I worked part-time for another start-up called Ultraleap who use ultrasound to allow you to feel things that aren’t there. Simultaneously I was also working on the idea for Impulsonics until I was able to go full time on that idea, developing the market proposition and the technology.

3.       What inspired you to join Impulsonics?

I helped co-found Impulsonics so it would have been quite awkward if I didn’t! That said, the original inception came from seeing the opportunities that our technology presented to biotech in academic conferences and a frustration that it wasn’t delivering on that promise. So I set out to change that and several years later here we are.

4.       What part of your job excites you most?

I love showing what our technology can do to customers and seeing them get excited about it. I trained as an engineer because I wanted solve problems and being able to apply this cutting-edge technology to such important ones is a huge privilege. I think biotech is going to be one of the main forces revolutionizing our lives over the 21st century and to help enable that is really exciting.

5.       What do you like to do outside of work?

I run a small improv theatre group that does sci-fi themed shows. We’ve done variations on Star Trek, The Twilight Zone and The X Files over the last few years and we even won an award at the Brighton Fringe Festival. It’s nice to do something so creatively different from work.

6.       If Impulsonics had a coat of arms what would you put on it and why?

I would put a turtle on it. Not because it has any particular relevance, I just think that it would look cool on a coat of arms and I like them. Also it would vibrate to emit ultrasound I guess because that would be fun.

7.       Can you describe your role using only emojis?

 Thanks Luke!
